Google recently requested clarification from the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada on its right to end its relationship with NV Energy, the regulated utility which serves most of the state.
Having recently purchased over 1,200 acres of land just outside of Reno, the San Francisco-based tech giant wants to explore supply options for the data center it plans to build there, according to a report from the Reno Gazette-Journal. While several large electricity consumers in Nevada have successfully defected from their incumbent to procure from third parties in recent years, they’ve only done so after paying massive exit fees—which Google is apparently seeking to avoid. Last year, MGM Resorts left NV Energy after paying a penalty in excess of $80M, citing a desire to reduce its environmental impact as a primary driver for the decision. Google has a similarly aggressive internal sustainability mandate, promising to run solely on renewable energy. The company met this target in 2017 through direct investment in solar and wind, as well as through the purchase of renewable offsets.
Following the move from MGM Resorts and other large casinos in the state, Nevada voters overwhelmingly elected to pursue de-regulation measures that would break up NV Energy’s control of the state’s electricity market in November's election. The measure still needs to pass another round of voting in 2018 before the state will follow through with de-regulation, but Google’s push to seek alternative supply options underscores the influence that emerging corporate adoption of renewable energy can have on large energy markets.

What's Driving the Market Up?
In the short term:
- Weather forecasts for early May show some promise for lingering heating demand

Prices for power are constantly fluctuating, and it can be difficult to know exactly when they are going to spike or plummet. While the Henry Hub provides the benchmark, prices tend to vary based on regional factors. These charts show how forward prices are trending over the previous calendar year at the hubs for New England (Algonquin), New York (both Transco Z6 NonNY and Transco Z6 NY) and Chicago (Chicago City Gate).
